After Whitewater’s settlers established a downtown and small businesses to meet the needs of the village, a tremendous boost was given when the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad chose Whitewater as a stop on its way from Milwaukee to Prairie du Chien. The original plan was to dig a canal from the Milwaukee area to the Rock River, but with the railroad making progress in the East, the railroad won out. Local merchandise found an outside market, most notably the plow and wagon manufactory of Winchester, DeWolf & Partridge and the Esterly reaper works on the east side. These two manufacturers had top-selling products that made Whitewater a bustling industrial town. The businesses had their ups and downs; occasional fires led to the destruction of some their buildings. Yet, these manufacturers were indebted to those who labored for them and rebuilt. The explosive industrial growth led to village incorporation in 1858. (Whitewater by Fred Kraege)
