Planning Meeting notes 2-27-07 Meeting goals:
  • Delegate task responsibilities based on the four designated committees that have been formed. The general Home-Coming committee will continue to meet for the time being. Once the committees are formed, they will then meet on an individual basis.
  • Gather enough information from our previous meeting to form a listing of tentative events for each day.
Committees: Make-It-Happen Committee
  • Chair: Geoff Hale
  • Committee members: DLK, Jon Kachel
  • Budget items:
    • $6, 000-fireworks
    • port-a-potties
    • $650/day trolleys/UW-W Busses/Other Vans
Fun Committee
  • Chair: Russ Walton
  • Committee members: Tom Barnes, Greg Torres
Community Committee
  • Chair: Jan Bilgen-Craggs
  • Committee members: Ginny Coburn, Dawn Hunter, Nancy Wendt, Donna Henry, Allison Lodge
Unity Committee
  • Chair:
  • Committee: Kristine Zaballos, Deb Weberpal
Updates
  • Stone Stable will be re-built next to the depot. Every effort will be made to have it completed by June 15th in time to have it not interfere with the fourth celebration.
  • Website: www.whitewaterhomecoming.com. Anyone that would like to go on and add their knowledge about Whitewater’s history is encouraged to do so. This site has potential to be our ‘log cabin.’ It will be something that people 100 years from now will be able to look at!
  • Fourth of July Committee:
    • Next meeting will be Thursday. They completed paperwork for fireworks. If we would like to have fireworks any additional nights, we need to act soon. Decision: We will have Home-Coming fireworks on Tuesday, July 3rd.
    • Sunday the attendance is lower due to obvious work schedules.
    • There will be a band playing with a local connection Tuesday night - they will be coming back to Whitewater to perform.
    • If we would like marching bands we must decide NOW; it is a very difficult day to book performers with little notice.
    • Port-a-potties- If we need extras to be ordered, we need to make a decision within the next 6 weeks. Possibly at the Basset House, Starin Park, etc…
  • Basset House: Will move their Old-fashioned event to Sunday, July 1st; the recommendation will be made at their meeting tomorrow night. There will be food, a civil war band, and games for children. Proposed time is 1-7 pm. Co-promotion ideas were discussed (signage, shuttle buses, etc.)
  • College High: Will move their time to 12pm on July 1st; it will be held either at the Lakefront Center or at Coulthart Room the University.
  • Cider Press: Paul Lauritzen has this and will get enough apples to perform demonstrations.
  • Bike Rentals: Paul Lauritzen will update bike rentals at the next meeting-perhaps on the quieter days. Purpose is to lower auto traffic during the festival between sites/events (not for use within Lakefront Park).

  • Possible Speaker: Barack Obama; we will have an update soon and then if it is successful Kevin Brunner will make that contact and we will pursue a comparable Republican candidate.
  • Kids’ games: Bill Bowen showed an interest in arranging children’s events on the quieter days.
Goals:
  • 1907 goal was to bring more than 1,000 back to Whitewater… they had over 2, 000.
  • Our goals: We need to be focused on the idea of unity; this is a way to measure success. We are able to do this via our website; this will be helpful to unite those who are unable to return to Whitewater but do not want to be excluded. We should also have a guest book.
Ideas:
  • Fireman rope pull/water fight
  • WI-Southern Train
  • May 7th-Federation Reunion at the Country Club
  • Extra EMT present
  • Sound system for an extra day
  • Adopt-a-fire hydrant painting program
Tentative schedule of events: Sunday: Grand Opening
  • Joint Church Services in the morning (open air at Lakefront Park)
  • Stable Rededication
  • Trolley tours with Marilyn Kienbaum
  • Fireman rope pull with a water fight
  • Kachel Kids’ or other baseball
  • Speeches outside (presidential candidates, attorney general)
  • Old World Baseball Team
  • Grand Dinner or dance
Monday: Family Day
  • Boats
  • Possible petting zoo/4H
  • WI-Southern Train
  • Kids’ events
  • Music: Big Band?
  • Cider Press
  • Magic Show with David Cleven
  • Bike rental
Tuesday: Reunion/History Day
  • Fireworks
  • Faculty reunion UW-W
  • Home-Comers/history
  • Possible dance at the Downtown Armory
  • Lodgewood: civil war reenactment
  • Rededicate the log cabin
  • Lincoln actor
  • Schools with WW history
Wednesday: Grand Finale · Parade presence · Antique car show, · Closing Ongoing:
  • Gathering Spot
  • Lawn contests
  • Arts Alliance/music
  • Period dress
  • Festooning, banners
  • Esterly information/agricultural and manufacturing display
  • Banner showing kids events
  • campus history (Lou Zahn regarding UW-W education)
  • Commemorative dvd (possibly charge a little more for this-as a fundraiser)
  • Alumni as Grand Marshall
  • “Celebrities” such as Mrs. Ambrose, Tom Hulce
  • Crossman Gallery: Fran Achen, Pescheret
Gather a core group of ex-faculty, especially school principals to call back their appropriate affiliates. The key to success is little by little…if all of the past administration calls back a few, it will add up. Next meeting date: March 13, 2007, at 6:30 PM in Lakefront Room
