Hackett's Grocery StoreThis is a featured page

Howard Hackett owned this store 1940s and 1950s, along with his wife Emma. The store provided for the food for the men who lived at the Armory who were attending the University (of which there were some who had come back from World War II).

Contributed by Beverly Ferguson: I was cutting meat in the meat department, and was a little careless, and cut my finger, they had me go down the street (and I can't remember the doctor's name; it might have been Dr. Miller) and he had me sitting the chair, and the next thing I remember was him standing over me saying "the blood won't stop".

When I got married they threw me a shower, and Howard also provided the ice cream for my wedding reception, and even went back and got more when we ran out. They were all such nice people.

Florence Goodhue (Howard's sister-in-law) was the leader of a local church group called Scrooby at the Congregational Church.
