Joseph C. Bower left his trademark on the city's streets. He came to the village in 1846, after learning the mason's trade in Milwaukee for several years, and helped build the brewery and constructed many of the brick buildings in town. At one time he owned 12 of them. An entire block on the south side of Center Street had been destroyed by fire in 1870, and after he rebuilt it, it was known as Bower's Block. He served many years as town treasurer. (Whitewater, Fred G. Kraege)
