Julius C. BirgeThis is a featured page

Julius C. Birge was the first child born in the new settlement at Whitewater, on November 18, 1839. His father, William, bought the stone mill in 1853 and added the brick addition in 1856. After his death in 1860, Julius, then 20, sucessfully ran the mill until illness forced him to go west. He later moved to St. Louis.

Julius Birge presented the Birge Fountain to the city of his birth on July 4, 1903. At that time, it was one of the largest fountains in the country, and there was some consternation among city officials about how much water it would require. It was placed on the site where the "Little Brick" schoolhouse, which Birge attended as a child, was built in 1844.

Julius Birge died in St. Louis on December 16, 1923. His obituary appeared in the Whitewater Register.

Ella Birge Currier, sister to Julius C. Birge, was my great grandmother. She was born in 1852 and died in 1919. I have a copy of "The Awakening of the Desert" given to me by I believe my grandmother Lydia Grace Currier Anthony. History, especially when it involves family history, is so rewarding. wwwsuziequilting@comcast.net
