Letter from Fred
March 5, 2007
About five years ago I was one of the members of the “Remember When” group who met in the community building at Starin Park. The eagerness of several of those present to see pictures and stories of long ago prompted me to make up the book on the Home-Coming of 1907.
Going through the old Registers I ran across the articles and letters that were making the greatest event your city had ever held, the last one of prominence other than our celebrations on the Fourth of July and our anniversary books. We had lost our last large industry in 1892 and did not have the job opportunities to cover that loss. Therefore approximately 3 out of 10 of those employed were forced to go elsewhere to work and support a family.
I knew little of this until I put together the book and saw the elation on the faces of James Kestol, Betty Boyd, and Alvin Stork when I put it front of them, adding scenes of the past, a glimpse of which those who came home might have remembered when they came home.
Friends, I’m sure that the year you are planning is another of friendship and unity and you will enjoy the fun of making it happen. I am in hope this is a catalyst to inspire more of these events in the future.
In 1907, the city has just finished 5 years of adding importance to the scene after the historic landmark City Hall was erected in 1899 – 1900: the Birge Fountain, the White Library, and the Early Annals of Whitewater in 1906. It took the hearts of the people to make this happen. We had little funds to work with then and here it is, 100 years later, and we are still striving to revitalize what little we have left.
I sense a great feeling of togetherness, civic pride, and unity of all will be an effort of fun. A community is one where everyone is part of it and sharing it for all.
