Life in WhitewaterThis is a featured page

I was raised in Whitewater. I am the daughter of Olaf and Lillian Worm. We lived on Cottage St. and attended St. Patrick's Church with Fr. Barry as our pastor. I attended State Teacher's College from kindergarten to 7th grade. Even though I have been away for many years, Whitewater will always be my home. I have many happy memories and many friends some of whom are still living and the wonderful people I knew when I was growing up. My mother, father, and fraternal our buried at Hillside. God Bless you all as we celebrate the 100th anniversy and I wish with all my heart that I could attend but my thoughts and my heart will be with you. Sincerely Mary Olivia Worm-Dutra

On Friday Nights in the 30s and 40s, year round, everybody from the surrounding communities that shopped in Whitewater would come in to town to "shop" - meaning to actually shop for things (the stores were open until 9:00 pm), but you could stand on the corner in front of Schultz's Dime Store (what we called it then) and sooner or later you would see everybody you knew practically.

The drugstores used to make ice cream cones - doing a "land office business", especially in the summer on those nights. There were a lot of boys and girls meeting each other, especially if you weren't allowed to date yet. The sidewalks were packed with people, sometimes you had a hard time driving down the street even, and finding a place to park.

There was a big parking lot across the street from the Armory (which is where we used to go roller skating two or three times a week).

During grade school, I would ride my bike downtown to Coast to Coast. There, Don Grosinske would help me find the items I needed, whether it were nails for a project or a new bike lock. He was always quick to strike up a conversation before I made it to the cash register. His daughter Sue and I have been friends ever since! Mary Kay (Fisher) Nelson
