"I just sat down with my Father to discuss this and he said that in the early sixites there was a story in the Whitewater Register on houses that were 100 years old or older. The house on Jefferson Street I referred to in the above response was one of the ones featured in the article. It was built by a southener that came ahead to Whitewater ahead of his family. He built the house in anticipation of his family's arrival at a later date. His wife had not wanted to move north. She came despite her misgivings. She woke up on a cold morning to find indians sleeping on the floor with their bare feet toward the fireplace. She made the decision she didn't want to stay so they moved away. She thought it to wild for her--to primitive. "

As my Father tells about this Hill there was a forest and it was sold and then cut the trees off for firewood. Then it was sold with the stumps and the next person cleared the field and mad eit into a pasture for farm land. Therer are stories about the KKK burning a cross on the top of the hill. The hill that stands today is greatly reduced in size to what it was. It was probably the highest point in Whitewater at one time. At one time it was thought that the water tower would be built up on the hill. Another time there was to be built a hospital. We came to the land by my Father purchasing adjacent property that was a parcel of my Grandfather's farm. A little more unofficial history.
