Raymond "Curly" Chamberlain
Ray Chamberlain was born in Whitewater in 1898. His family lived on Oak Street when he was growing up. He and his brother, Fred, were in the clothing business, operating in downtown Whitewater. Initially Fred had a men's clothing store and Ray had a shoe store (on Center Street), and they combined them into a store named Chamberlains.
Chamberlains operated at several spots on Main Street, first on the north side of the easternmost block, near where Fat Jack's. After a fire, they moved to a site across from where the Double Dip Deli is now. They continued in the location in the 1940s and 1950s, during which time Ray's son, Dick, took over after he was in the Korean War. Dick took over in the late 1950s when Ray became the Postmaster. and Fred, who lived into his 90s, branched off into real estate. Dick later went into business with Harry Leffingwell.
Ray was on the Common Council and Fred was on the school board in the 1940s and 1950s.
Ray Chamberlain and his wife, Alta Sleep Chamberlain (a teacher, who graduated from Whitewater Normal School), lived at 105 Whiton Street from 1925 till 1958, where they raised two children, Phyllis and Dick. Dick married Donna Hemker from West Salem, WI., in 1956, and they raised their family in the same house til 1991. They had three children, Debra, John, and Ruth.
Phyllis married Bill Masterson in 1947, and they lived at 214 Whiton Street from 1952 until 1978, and they raised three children there, Kim , Karla , and Bruce.
