The Carriage TradeThis is a featured page

Contributed by Dawn Hunter: This was run by Jean Olsen (wife of Jerry Olson), who lived on Prairie Street. The Carriage Trade was a children's store with infant through size 12 clothing. It was located in the old First Citizen's Bank Building - the dressing room was in the vault - at the corner of Main and Second Streets, currently a Japanese food store. I worked there in the early 1970s, mainly on Saturdays... I even got a discount on clothes for my kids! Maxwell Street days was a big deal then, with a theme and dressing up in costumes (one year we had leiderhosen) that Jean made (she was an excellent seamstress). (April 1, 2007)

They were the most fun! The weather usually cooperated.

Maxwell Street Day was one of those days that some residents looked forward to all year. Like a Merchant's big Garage Sale. Now that you mention it some of the store clerks did wear costumes. Seems like it was always on a Friday in July?
