This was a restaurant popular during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, right across the street from campus at the southeast corner of Main and Whiton streets.

The Goalpost was a short-order restaurant owned by Paul and Therese Jones and their children Don, Dick, and Carol.

(Contributed by Carol Jones Holford) Sadie Jones bought the Goalpost Restaurant sometime before 1945. In 1945 her nephew, Paul, got out of the Navy and was living in Milwaukee with his family, looking for a job. Paul and Sadie ran the Goalpost together until her death in 1953. After that, Paul ran it with his wife, Therese, and children Carol, Dick and Don. Paul was the "host," Therese did the cooking, Carol waitressed along with many college students through the years, and Dick and Don washed dishes.

After Paul died in 1965, Therese ran it for a few more years and then sold it to Schlossers Restaurant. It was later a bookstore (name?) and then Salamone's Restaurant, bfroe it was torn down (year?) to make way for student housing.

The goalpost was always a happy, active place, the only restaurant at that time near campus. During football games the family would close, run up to see the game, and then leave 10 minutes early to beat the crowd back and reopen. Pete Johnson would come in in the mornings and bring the butcher order and then stay for a cup of coffee.

Early on, the family lived at the southeast corner of Center and Franklin, together with Aunt Sadie. After Sadie died, the family lived above the Goalpost restaurant itself. After Therese sold the restaurant in the late 1960s, she worked as a dental hygienist and as a hostess at both Randy's and the Black Stallion.

One high point that Carol recalls is waiting on the Vienna Boys' Choir members when they visited to play at the University.

In closing, Carol would like to say to Don and Dick: "We need more silverware!"

Remembrances:

Anonymous: As a student in the early 50s we ate our meals at the Goal Post. There were no dining halls at that time. I lived across the street on the corner of Main and Graham St. Before the mall down the middle of campus. It was our social center as well, card playing and just hanging out. I remember the Jones had a pet monkey that jumped around and helped itself to our food., oh the health dept. would have fun with that today. (June, 2007)

Anonymous: While attending high school in the school on Highland St. We use to go to the Goal Post for lunch. For 25 cents you got the best malt and potato chips in town. Our parents didn't know we were spending our 35 cents on hot lunch and pocketing a dime. Lots of fun times, especially after school when the college guys were around. (June, 2007)

Contributed by Betty Schneible: I used to love to go there, right across from the college, where Old Main was, which is where I went to school from third grade until I was a junior in High School. The had sandwiches and sodas, they may have had plate lunches - it was frequently a crowded place, especially at noon. They also sold potato chips and candy bars.

Contributed by Linda Loomer: I used to eat at the Goalpost when Iwas in college here. Back then the only place to eat was the Union, and it was big wooden building. I used to get two hotdogs and beans and I think it cost 25 cents. (June, 2007)

I too think that the man sitting on the right is that of Arnold Lein. As to the other man I do not know, but it could be Mack McGraw as he and Arnold were really good friends if memory serves me right.

I believe the men sitting at the counter were incorrectly identified. The man on the left looks like Adolf Winther and the man next to him looks like Arnold Lien. Does anyone else agree?
