The Whitewater Normal School was constructed in 1868, with Newton M. Littlejohn and Judge Samuel Austin White heading the building committee. As it was the second state normal school established in Wisconsin, Whitewater competed with many other sites for the privilege. It later became a state teacher's college, a Wisconsin state college, and eventually part of the Wisconsin State University System. In 1972, this system merged with the University of Wisconsin System, and the Whitewater campus became the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. (Whitewater, Fred Kraege)

Carlson Hall at the University was built as large main frame computers were the highest level of technology. The building was designed with long narrow windows and a rectangular shape intended to look like a computer punch card. Little did the architects realize that personal computers would soon make those punch cards a relic of the past.
