Whitewater Bus Station/Cab DriversThis is a featured page

The Greyhound Bus Station used to be located on First Street, north of Main, across from Ketterhagen's, where Knudsen's Insurance is located. It later moved to 2nd Street, north of Main, where Rosa's Pizza is now located.

Memories:

Anonymous: Wally Robeson remembers getting a call from the Red Hen (which later became Randy's). Usually, a car full of female students would load in smelling strongly of deep fried food and beer. They preferred to return home by cab than to accept a ride with another student, and there weren't many students who had cars. (June 7, 2007)

Contributed by Betty Schoonever: During the late 1940's and 50's I used to take the Greyhound bus from Chicago to Whitewater to visit my grandparents @ Warner Homestead Farm. Then the bus depot was in the building where Knutsen Insurance is now on 1st Street across from Ketterhagen. After the bus depot moved to the next street west,(now Rosa Pizza) the building on 1st St. became an ice cream store run by the Bradley Family. (May 29, 2007)

Anonymous: I remember that there was a bus station where Rosa's is now. I believe it was Greyhound--not sure. Eventually they left and you had to travel to Janesville to catch the bus. When I was growing up there used to be a sign for the cab parking at the corner of Main and where the dime store(Schultz Bros.) was. I'd say this was in the seventies. (May 9, 2007)

Wally Robeson was a night cab driver. There was a hand-lettered sign at the bus station that said "If you spit on the floor at home, go home and spit". The gentlemen who ran the bus depot said a couple of guys were sitting in there spitting on the floor and he got tired of it and made the sign. Bus depot was across the street from Ketterhagen - where Knudsen Insurance office is now. It was Cardinal Bus Lines.
