Whitewater in the 1950sThis is a featured page

Margaret Patzer's memories of moving to Wisconsin from Manitoba, Canada.

Contributed by Lyle Hunter 1954-58

As a college student in the 1950's in Whitewater meals were more of a problem then they are now for college students. We had a circuit of places to eat. Main Cafe, currently Jessicas, and the hotel, currently the Sweet Spot, were two frequent stops. The highlight was cost suppers at the Congregational Church done by a college church group, Scrooby. The meals ranged from turkey, ham, and what ever might be on sale. One of the members was ex army cook, another worked in a super market on weekends, and plenty of volunteer help made them possible. The meal and the fellowship were a nice change. Warren Theuene and Mariam Pope were the faculty advisers. May 2007

We moved to Whitewater in 1953. It was not an unfamiliar town for us, as we moved here from Palmyra. We lived on the East Side and attended the East Side School. There was an ice skating rink that everyone used during the winters. In the summer, we swam at Trippe Lake, watched the trains from the foot bridge, night movies at the Co-op, drank A&W root beer, ate popsicles from Lane's Grocery Store, roller skated on the sidewalks, rode our bikes down the school hill, played softball, went to the Strand theatre to watch Kit Carson, the Gene Autry, Jail House Rock, etc. for 5 cents. Watched Howdy Doody, Foreman Tom and the Mickey Mouse Club on a black and white TV. Our parents watched, Donald O'Connor, Kate Smith and Lawrence Welk. Growing up in Whitewater was great. Our teachers were awesome...Mrs. Grave, Mr. Tester, Coach Crummey, Mr. Achen, Mr. Nelson to name just a few. High School football games at the field on Highland street. Basketball games at the Armory, mixers in the gym.

My parents moving to Whitewater and growing up here was the best thing that ever happened for me.

The Main Cafe was across the street from Jessica's . It was owned by Harold and Bonnie Krohn and then Lil Pizzichini and her husband bought it. At the end it was known as Main St. Bar. Jessica's was called The College Grill in the 50's.
